Rory,

I have the roll for D COMPANY, as indicated in my first post. Your man does NOT appear on the roll I have.

I have a single bar "RofL" to a Spion Kop casualty; he does not appear on the D Company roll and thus must be C Company.

D Company Killed on Spion Kop are:

Capt CGFG Birch
Lieut FM Raphael
3108 Sgt A Thomas
3631 Pte E Jones
4252 Lce Cpl J Chinnery

Died of wounds

4690 Cpl A Throp

Wounded on Spion Kop

2840 Lce Cpl J Callaghan
2956 Pte C Chorley
2986 Pte E Dyer
3497 Pte J Gornall
5708 Pte G Johnson
3360 Pte N Manning NOTE although this man is shown as wounded 24 1 1900, he is not shown as being in action on SK
2830 Pte C Thomas
2765 Pte J Tomlinson
5728 Pte P Walsh also prisoner of war

The following are shown as " Spion Kop, Never heard of supposed to be buried on S.Kop as none of the Prisoners of war ever saw these two men."
5750 Pte J Doyle
2783 Pte T Trainor

Prisoners of War

4238 Pte J Millward
3929 Pte W Spencer
5590 Pte R Sweeny "Took Prisoner S.K. wounded at Orange Spruit." "June 1900"
2994 Pte W Walpole

NOTE:

The numbers, rank and spellings are shown as per roll and not necessarily how shown on the medal rolls.

Thanks for this Mark.

A valuable piece of the SLR Spion Kop jigsaw that we may never complete entirely but we hopefully can add to by research or good fortune now that you have started the ball rolling.

The D Company roll shows the "Engagements" fought in by each member; these are (spelling as per roll);

“Venters Spruit” ; to be referred to as "VS" by me
“Spion Kop”; to be referred to as "SK" by me
“Potgieters Kopje”: to be referred to as "PK" by me
“Tugela & Colenso Kopjes 22 & 23”; to be referred to as "TCK" by me
“Pieters Hill”; to be referred to as "PH" by me

D Company Killed on Spion Kop are:

Capt CGFG Birch VS, SK
Lieut FM Raphael VS, SK
3108 Sgt A Thomas VS, SK
3631 Pte E Jones VS, SK
4252 Lce Cpl J Chinnery VS, SK

2956 Pte C Chorley VS SK
2986 Pte E Dyer VS SK
3497 Pte J Gornall VS SK
5708 Pte G Johnson VS SK
3360 Pte N Manning PK TCK PH NOTE although shown as wounded 24 1 1900 this man is not shown as being in action on SK
2830 Pte C Thomas VS SK

3929 Pte W Spencer VS SK
5590 Pte R Sweeny VS SK "Took Prisoner S.K. wounded at Orange Spruit." "June 1900"

The compiler of the roll, I assume it to be 2184 Clr Sgt H Cleaver (VS SK PK TCK PH), also compiled a “casualty roll”. The reasons for becoming a casualty are as shown and as I can decipher the handwriting.

Killed Colenso Kopjies 22.2 00

3508 Pte R Pennington VS SK PK TCK

Killed Pieters Hill 27.2.00

3533 Pte S Jones VS SK PK TCK PH

Died of wounds

Mark Abbott wrote: My latest purchase is a two bar ( T.H., RoL) to 3060 Pte J Pearson South Lancs who was according to the medal roll, invalided home.

On checking my roll of those men who served in "D" Company, it transpires that he was one of the men who fought at Spion Kop! He also fought at all the engagements his regiment were involved in upto the relief of Ladysmith. The roll also confirms that the reason for him being invalided home was "fever".

I recently picked this medal up without the research that Pte Pearson is confirmed at Spion Kop. The price reflected the lack of a Spion Kop connection.

I have messaged Mark off different platforms to ask the source of his research, but not heard a reply. I trust he is well, does anyone know how I can get in contact with Mark?
