Dear Rory, thank you for this interesting read, which I just stumbled across while trying to find more information about the following medal:

Lot 69
Date of Auction: 30th March 2011
Sold for £150
Estimate: £120 - £160
Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 1 clasp, Relief of Ladysmith (Dvr. J. Eckstein, Natal Vol. T.S.) minor edge bruising and contact marks, good very fine £120-160
Footnote
Natal Volunteer Transport Service. With copied roll extract.

I do not know if this gentleman is my great great grandfather and I hope to find further information which might be helpful. My great great grandfather had been a driver but not much is known about him (he died before my grandmother was born). Is there any way of knowing if the medal was ever received? There were no pictures on the DNW Auction website. How does one go about finding out what information was on record for this gentleman?

Many thanks in anticipation
Renee

Hello Renee

Unfortunately there are no service papers for this unit and thus the details, even the christian names, of these chaps are unknown.

I can't think where else you would be able to look. I have scanned the Natal Archival entries from 1900 and found 23 entries with that surname but, alas, I don't think any fit this man.

Regards

Rory
