I was recently at the OMRS in London, and managed to get this group.

It is to G Bowkins, of the Cape Mounted Rifles. I think this is an iconic group for a long serving Caper. I am pleased with the Cape medal on the front and the Cape of Good Hope LSGC on the end.

Not sure where to go further with this, all I have is his gazette entry for the LSGC.

Hello Ryan,

Wonderful group. Do you have his Regimental number as I might have some thing on him.

Not much of a reply I fear; the COGH roll has "BOWINS G" - not BOWKINS. The QSA and KSA rolls show him as "330 Sjt G. Bowins" as well. Some time ago I had peretinkent research a couple of CMR groups and he was able to access some CMR records in SA. These told me what Company my chaps served in and when. One of the chaps had a LSGC and a disciplinary history was provided. I suppose no knowing what you will find. Even if you find very little, the CMR were an excellent and hard-working unit right throughout the campaign.
Good luck
IL.

The only records in Cape Town are the DD7/60 ---DD7/65 volumes.

I have access to these and yes they do show postings, date of joining and medals etc

HOWEVER, let me say right up front that DD7/60 which has the Reg numbers 1--1500 is in a very very poor condition and has almost completely fallen apart. There is a 50% chance that his page is still in the book !!

They are named as follows (Linneyl is right it is Bowins not Bowkins):

Cape - Pte G Bowins CM RIFn.
QSA - 330 Serjt G Bowins Cape MR
QSA - 330 Serjt G Bowins Cape MR
LSGC - Sgt G Bowins Cape MR. This is named "upside down" so read with the moarch (Edward) facing down.

If you find anything if you are in the archives again Adrian I would be very grateful.

Cheers
Ryan
