I have just acquired this man's QSA, clasps CC, OFS, TVL, SA 1901. I have a number of questions, which I hope members can help me with.

The medal rolls of the 1st K.F.S.confirm this entitlement and the nominal roll shows that he enlisted at Bulawayo on 14 January 1901 and was discharged at Pretoria on 12 July 1901 ''c/s'.I presume 'c/s' means that he had reached the end of his enlistment period? As best I can read the medal roll his medal was sent on 26/7/11 to 81 , Railway St., Germiston, Transvaal.

The KFS medal roll notes that he also served with the Bechuanaland Rifle Volunteers and he also appears on that unit's ' medal roll, with number 389, as entitled to the CC and TVL clasps, but with the annotation that the medal and three state clasps are issued off the KFS roll. I can't find any details of his Bechuanaland service-does anybody know where I might be able to find this? This roll also states that he, as with a number of others, had previously been with the Mafeking District Mounted Troops. Not only do I not know when he served with them ,but I can find out nothing about them. There is nothing in the unit information section of this forum, other than the fact that they existed. Does anybody know anything about the unit? Did they play any role in the Defence?

Finally, this is yet another example, in my small collection, of medal rolls, particularly to S African units, being cross-referenced. By what process did the compiler of one unit's medal roll know what was being entered in the medal roll of another unit?

I am just starting to research this man. I think Lockem is a pretty uncommon name, and I would be grateful for any other information about him that members might be able to provide

Thanks

Patrick

I'd start with his papers, if they exist, a careful look through WO126/1 and WO126/76-82 for any surviving papers for both the BR and KFS, I certainly don't recall seeing any Mafeking DMT papers here.
