Hello Brett

A scan of all the "R" Buchanan's abounding in Natal at the time of the Boer War shows that a Reginald Cyril Buchanan is most likely your man.

He was a Farmer from Redington in the Midlands who married in 1903. He passed away in Natal in 1941 and his MSCE file is in the Archives.

There are never any guarantees but it might be worth pulling his file - you never know there may be a reference to Boer war service in general and Murray's Scouts in particular.

Many thanks for your suggestion. I remember being very disappointed by being unable to put 'my' Buchanan in context. I expect that of families with dense family trees, but not of those that have skeletal ones.

Herewith a scan of the QSA to "Murray's Scouts" that I bought at auction in 2001 against very stiff competition and at a price detrimental to my bank balance!!
I know nothing about Bowman, but have a suspicion that he may be related (brother??) to the founder of the legal firm Bowman Gillfillan.
