Good morning Iain,
I was not suggesting they wiped the stuff directly on to their helmets, they used it to make a dye! :silly:

Hi Frank,

I'm sure cow dung is easy to apply, they probably let it dry first. Tea however conjures up other images like...."'ere mate just tip yer cup a' char over me 'ead, I don't wanna die today!" :silly:

regards Iain

Hello Mike,
I am not a member of that particular forum, so I can't look at your photos on it, but, I'd be very keen to see the example you mentioned as being sold in Toronto as a gift.
Regards Frank

Hi Frank.....

This badge was also worn as a General Militia badge in Canada....

Here is an article that I did for the British Badge Forum.....

I am not at home now as this is Thanksgiving Weekend and at family for supper so I cannot send the pictures here....

Hello Frank.....

Here is the badge that was sold to the general public.....

As I understand it the Mayor of Toronto had a Blue Ribbon with Mayor on it, the City Council had the Gold Ribbons, The City Police and Fire Department had Red Ribbons and the ones sold to the General Public had Tri-Coloured (Red-White-Blue) Ribbons.....

These were sold at the time of the ceremony when the Toronto Welcome Home medals were given out.....

These welcome home medals were also sold to the General Public..... The officially issued ones were named in the same style as the QSA..... The sold medals had no name they were also sold as medallions which were the planchets in silver, bronze and white metal.....

Hello Mike,
Thanks for clearing that up, it would have been an issue of great importance if I had one of those in my collection as a badge worn by Canadian soldiers in South Africa, but, I do not! :) so all is well.
Best regards Frank.

That is not to say that I don't like it, just that I confine collecting to items actually worn by the combatants in South Africa! :)
