Maxim gun manufactured by a Boer at Fiksburg, captured by the CMR at Hammonia.

I came across this short piece about the above gun by MC Heunis in the OVSAC (Oranje Vrijstaat Artillerie Corps Historical Study and Re-enactment Group) Study No. 6, Sep/Oct 2003:

The “Ficksburg Maxim”

Evert van Niekerk, a blacksmith from the Free State town of Ficksburg, made a hand-cranked machine gun by using the barrel of a 7x57mm Boer Mauser rifle. The gun was equipped with a water jacket and was fitted on a peculiar looking mounting complete with a spring-loaded seat. Whether this gun actually functioned is unknown, but it is doubted whether Maxim would have worried about possible competition from Van Niekerk’s design!

The gun was captured by the Cape Mounted Rifles at Hammonia on 23 May 1900. No records on its actual war use or its whereabouts after capture could be found.

One of the 500 Mauser bayonets ordered by the Z.A.R. on 25th July 1899, but which were never delivered due to the British blockade of Lourenço Marques. This example retains its original frog.

Ron Bester 2003, pp 263 - 266, notes: "their subsequent whereabouts are unknown, or how they survived World War I, but at least part of the consignment eventually reached the warehouse of Francis Bannerman, Army Surplus Dealers in New York. In 1927, Francis Bannerman advertised ... 'Mauser rifle sidearm sword bayonet with saw edge. Made for the Boers in South Africa' ". The bayonet below was purchased from a dealer in the US.

A small number (fifty) had been ordered by Colonel Adolf Schiel in 1898, and these arrived in South Africa in February 1899. The earlier batch differ from the example shown below in that they have no maker's mark and are numbered on the grip.

Made by Simson & Co. of Suhl, Germany.
