Following on from the photo above, here are the guns of No 4 Mountain Battery firing during the battle of Vaalkrans. They used black powder, hence the huge pall of smoke which revealed their position immediately. This alone would have rendered them useless on Spioenkop, if they'd made it to the summit.

The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.
