I am trying to obtain information regarding my Great Grand Father's unit based on this Photograph.
I have done some research and cannot find any reference to this uniform any where.
According to Family he served as a Sargent Major in both India and the Boer War.
Can anyone point me the right direction.
Thanks

Hello, welcome here,
The photograph you show is post Anglo Boer War, perhaps you could tell us your great grandfathers name and any other basic details such as date and place of birth.
Regards Frank Kelly

HI, interesting photo I agree post Boer war, must be somewhere very cold, the only clue is the dancing figure background on the panelling looks to me to be Asian, and some sort of signature to bottom right, could possibly be Kashmir area, I believe which had British around this time, only a long shot, but might help.

Hi

This looks like one of the goatskin coats issued during WW1, and worn on the Western Front, so I'm not sure the dancing figure is relevant -maybe a studio background. He's wearing riding breeches, which might suggest cavalry or Royal Artillery. I can't tell what cap badge it is, but, based on the shape, which appears to feature a grenade, the following are possibilities;Royal Scots Greys (bandsman), Northumberland Fusiliers, Royal Fusiliers,Royal Welsh Fusiliers, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, Royal Marine Artillery,Royal Munster Fusiliers,Royal Irish Fusiliers,Grenadier Guards,Honorable Artillery Company. Only a couple of these tie in with the riding breeches!

I assume you know his name-if so, do a search on Ancestry or similar and see what results you get, and then try to narrow it down, based on WW1 service and possible units.

Let us know how you get on.

Patrick

Such "fur coats" were worn on the Western Front - see justanotherww1.tumblr.com/page/16
