Hello, I’m Andy, from Fleetwood Iv recently entered the world of Medals after finding a Great War medal while metal detecting.
Iv recently purchased, somewhat impulsively, a QSA medal in the name of JW Scarles no. 2039, KRRR. He’s on the medal roll curtesy of Ancestry but I’m struggling to find out anything else, if someone could point me in the right direction I would be most grateful, thanks

Hi Bisch,

Welcome to the forum; like yourself I could only find mention of him on the medal roll; entitled to the "Cape Colony" clasp.

Fyi - the only other "hit" I got on Fold3 when searching for a regimental/service number of 2039 with the KRCC is the one below; which doesn't make sense so probably an indexing error:

I'll let you know if I find any more information.

Regards,
Sturgy

Hello Bish
Welcome to the forum.

I think your man was James William Scarles a collier from Yorkshire.
There are some very dilapidated papers on Ancestry. Also 3039 has been used in error.

He was also entitled to a Kings South African medal I believe. As per this site list but I haven't found it yet..

Good luck with your research, there are a few clues for you in the above.

Hi Bish

I'm pretty certain that there is no KSA medal for James.
He attested in Gosport in 1899.
He served in South Africa, Ceylon and India.
Also served in WW1 with the Northamptonshire's Regiment number 26265.

Additional information for your research.

Best wishes

Unless I'm missing something I can't see how he qualified for a KSA. His papers show his South African service to be just 62 days between late May and late July 1900. Qualification for a KSA was 18 months war service extending into 1902. He was in India for the whole of 1902 and beyond.
