There is an interesting post on the GMIC about Dr Edward Charles Long, who was the Principal Medical Officer in Basutoland over the period of the Boer War. It was written that he was awarded a no clasp QSA named to the Basutoland Civil Service. The copy of the QSA roll for this unit is shown in this post and it has a cross through all the names. However, there is also a note that one medal was awarded.
I tried but failed to find this roll in the National Archives on-line QSA rolls, but it must be there somewhere.
Can anyone shed more light on this matter?

Brett

Morning Brett

There are three rolls for the Basutoland Civil Admin: WO100/299pp181,183, 285

The first, 68/SA/3156 issues seven medals with no clasp to the Resident Commissioner and six assistants. The second, 68/SA/6911, issues one medal to the Asst-Commissioner. Long and others are included on these two rolls but it is clearly marked no medals to be issued against these names; medical officers and policemen. The first Resident Commissioner, Sir Godfrey Lagden, has a roll to himself, 68/STAFF/475, and receives a QSA with CC,OFS,T "by command of the King". Further notes show that Lagden applied for a KSA and QSA for his unnamed son, these applications were denied.

On Ancestry Long is indexed as "Edward Charles Long" and Lagden is "Sir Goupey Lagden".

I can't see a medal issued to Long.

Hello Meurig,

Page 181 also states " those above the red line to get medals with no clasps" Long is below the red line. No medal for Long.

Many thanks for filling in the details, Meurig and Adrian.
I first became interested in Basutoland after making several visits to the Forester's Arms in Maseru while engaged in a university project at Ladybrand. It was once my ambition to acquire a medal named to the Basutoland Mounted Police. Another unfulfilled wish ........

Brett
