I am researching my great grandfather Battery Sergeant Major 57398 William George PHILLIPS DCM...he was with 28 Battery RFA during the Boer War.

Would be grateful for any information on how he won his DCM.

Thanks...Richard

His DCM was announced in LG of 29/9/1901 and in Army Orders of 15/1902. The reference shows no Remarks. 28th Battery, RFA was engaged on the Tugela and much travelled during the guerilla phase of the campaign. Perhaps if you checked for his records (ancestry??) this might give you more info.
Best of luck with your quest

Richard,

Often there are no citations for Boer War DCMs. I'll check the London Gazette and newspapers.

It might be worth checking the local media of the time.

Have you searched for his service papers on FIndMyPast? The index is free to search with access to the documents being chargeable or free at the National Archived (if they have survived).

Best wishes
David

I was going through my roll of RA men on another matter and had a look in WO 100/186 (28th Bty., RFA) for your GGF. He was awarded the clasps Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal on his QSA. In my previous post, I failed to pick up that his correct Regimental number is 51398; not 57398. Sorry about that!
You might let us know what you found out about your GGF. If you wish to see a potted history of where the 28th RFA went and what it did, the Battery has an entry in Stirling's "Our Regiments". That book is on the "books" section of this site.
All the best
IL.
