A QSA with clasp Defence of Kimberley is up for grabs at a local auction house along with the recipient's Kimberley Star sans the ribbon ans suspenders.

What is intriguing though is that there is a medal ribbon bar with a CGHGSM/QSA/KSA combination to which I don't think the chap was entitled. The medal is to 37 Pte. F.H. Kingston of the Cape Police and a study of the QSA roll unearths the comment "NOT ENTITLED TO A KSA" whereas he does appear on the KSA roll but, like so many colonials, probably didn't qualify and decided to award it to himself.

The CGHGSM is more than likely wishful thinking as his name does not appear on that roll either - leaving what is up for auction his complete entitlement.

Rory,

An interesting item.

My information says:

Kingston, 37 Pte Frank Henry, CP2
QSA (1) DoK
CP dismounted branch (barrier & redoubt duties). Applied for KSA medal but refused 1930
His KSA is listed and crossed through on WO100/359p188

I don't think he received the CGHGSM either.

Best wishes
David

Hello Rory,
How do you know if the ribbon bar, you mention, actually belonged to Kingston?

Thanks for that David - I had noticed the request for a KSA being denied in 1930 so that answers that question - as to the CGHGSM - as stated I checked the roll and he's simply not there; even after allowing for variations in the spelling of his name.

Frank - to answer your question - the medals and ribbon bar came from the family as a unit. I suspect that Kingston, like so many of his colleagues, felt entitled to the KSA and thus wore the ribbon bar reflecting this even if he couldn't produce the actual medal itself. The CGHGSM was awarded to quite a number of Cape Police chaps and, again, I suspect that he felt "left out" and awarded himself one albeit just the ribbon bar.
