Nell1895,

This account appeared in The Times on 15 Mar 1900, a prelude to the engagement a month later.

"Drackoentler" would appear to be an awful corruption of Draghoender, a village.

and Maurice is referenced as "HMG" (His Majesty's Government - Official History of the War) in The Gazetteer :)

There is short mention of this action in Stevens' book .

The enemy was beaten by Orpen's Horse at Koegaspont near Drackoentler on April 12th. This little force was very useful in surprising rebellious agriculturalists and giving them the choice of surrender or a trial at Capetown for treason, when terms of imprisonment from three to five years were inflicted.

Page 16 and 17 of Maurice's account confirm Meurig's information and explain why Orpen's Horse were stationed at Keogas Pont at the time.

A picture of the poem would be fascinating to see.

Best wishes
David

Nell

Thank you for posting a pic of the poem. I am sure that a conservator at the National Army Museum will be able restore the paper to near its original state and then preserve it for the generations to come.

Regards
Brett
