This family gravestone is in Nab Wood Cemetery, near Shipley, West Yorkshire. The ABW name-search brings up a C. A. Tavener as being in the Duke of Edinburgh's Own Volunteer Rifles - the same man?

His name doesn't appear on either of Bingley's or Shipley's ABW memorials; I did ask at Shipley Library but they didn't have the local newspaper files as far back as 1901, Bradford will have them.

CHARLES ALLAN TAVENER,
AGED 32
WHO WAS ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED
IN THE MODDER RIVER, FEBY. 4TH, 1901.
THY WILL BE DONE.

Hello Berenice

I think they are the same man - www.boerwarregister.com shows CA Tavener drowned 4-2-1901, which is from the cas rolls.

A number of family trees on Ancestry make the connection - it appears he was born in Marylebone, London. Not sure where the connection to Shipley comes in and perhaps this explains why he is not on other local WMs.

Findagrave.com claim CA Tavener is the father of Allan Tavener, the four year old boy whose grave this is. Not sure whether they have extra info or this supposition based on the grave only.

I'll make some enquiries at Bradford Library archives, check they have the Shipley 'paper (the Bradford Telegraph & Argus probably covered Shipley too) and will see when I can get there. Having a Senior Railcard is helping me get around a lot more now!

Thank you for your recent posts. It has been good to see your avatar brightening up the 'Forum latest' column again, and it is also good that you will be "getting around a lot more". It gives us more to look forward to.
