Indeed David. This is the best quality selection of QSA material Spink have had for quite a while and heavy on Defence of Mafeking and Defence of Kimberley material.

I'm puzzled though why Kimberley Stars are included with lots 234 (18th Hussars) and 239 (Cape Town Highlanders) when neither man was present at the siege of Kimberley.

I'm surprised at the number of split groups!

Will be going for a reunite as well.

I had a good read of the catalogue last night and, while the quality of the South African material is excellent, I was struck by four aspects:

1. The random way in which the medals are arranged in many photographs
2a. The lack of research (biographical information and/or unit information)
2b. A lack of clarity about any missing medals
3. The inaccuracy of many estimates

Point 2a also has an upside for collectors as there is an opportunity to discover some fascinating stories of the recipients of these medals.

I was reminded of the 2018 Spink catalogue of the Terry Sole collection and wondered whether Spink could have re-used some of that information in this catalogue?

From 2018

From 2022
