Does anyone have accurate numbers of troops, specifically those that would have got a QSA, per country? Specifically Britain versus South African units combined?

I am preparing a presentation on the DCM to South Africans for our local medal group and am looking for the percentage per country.

I then want to look at what citations I can find to see why they mainly got them, to see if the chance was lower as a local or they were rewarded for different reasons.

I have my suspicions but want statistics to back it up.

Thanks
Ryan

I suggest you consult Maurice Vol. IV Appendix 12, pages 671-673; "Strength of the Garrison in South Africa on August 1st 1899, and Reinforcements, etc, from Home and Colonies during the War, up to May 31st, 1902". I can give you the break-up of Aust, NZ and Canada (from Laurie Field's book) - but you don't appear to want them.

That appendix is here, Ryan.

The table should enable you to derive the number of troops by country.
