Hi, does anyone know where I can obtain casualty statistics for the Boer War broken down into causes of death? i.e killed in action, died of wounds, died of disease, accidents etc. Even better would be the diseases themselves listed.

Many thanks

John

John

There are a number of sources, some are better than others and as I have found recently, some are incorrect, but in the main, they are ok.

The two I use as a basic search are the South African War Casualty Roll, two volumes and In Memoriam by Steve Watt, which is excellent and has most information.

There was a thread recently that also listed the unusual causes of death, here, angloboerwar.com/forum/13-miscellany/101...can-casualties#21184

John,

Echoing what Doug suggested, In Memorial would be a good place to start. Steve Watt lists 90 casualty types including killed in a brawl, died of heat, suffocated etc.

Thank you both for your replies. Has anyone summarized these data? The nearest I came to this is this list but it doesn't specify the diseases though I guess the most common would be dysentery, cholera, typhoid, malaria and pneumonia or TB based on my findings from the American Civil War.

Thanks again

Hello John

I have a database of the Official Casualty rolls which has been added to and corrected which is available on my website www.boerwarregister.com - on an individual basis, i.e. search by surname.

I have yet to open the data up for the types of query you want to perform.
