I sent an email to the achives and then went to visit the museum,.

We then went to the Archives and Liam and another lady helped us look at books and they did a quick search but they had nothing.
I was very surprised as looking at the website they seen to hold all records, but they had nothing regarding him.

I am both surprised and saddened to hear that, they do not have any individual records for the rank and file, they are at Kew, your great grandfather was not discharged, so his will not have survived in full , as such, anyway, but, I do know they have a considerable amount of material for the period in question here and they should have been able to tell you about the regiments VSC's at the very least, in particular and their part in the war.

The only thing I can do for you is send you his partial WO96 papers, if you want to pm your email address to me, I can do today.
If you go back to Ashton, I would try and speak to one of the trustees such as Robert Bonner.
Let me know on the partial WO96 as and when and I will do that for you.
Do you have his medal, I forgot to ask you?
Regards Frank

Hello again Meg,
I had meant to show you this picture ages ago, but, did not, take a good look at it, these are the NCO's of the 3rd and 4th Militia Battalions, in front of the old officer's mess at their depot in Ashton, your great grandfather would have known many of these men quite well I would think, he had joined the regiment in 1885, this photograph is circa 1888.
Big black moustaches, stout fellows, many had seen service in Egypt and the Sudan, dependable and good soldiers!
Regards again Frank
