The Pelteret site ( www.pelteret.co.za/pdf/numismatics/mafek...ribute_medallion.pdf ) states:

"For this service [in the MTG], he, as with all other members of the Town Guard, would have been paid an allowance of 2/6d. a day against wear and tear of clothing. Baden-Powell made it clear that this stipend was not in lieu of pay and carried with it no rights"

David
I trawled through the Walker opus with special examination of Garrison ROs (sorry, Routine Orders) and no mention of "Trench Rates" or the rate of renumeration. There were many examples of individuals being granted extra pay for higher or special duties, however. One further point, a "wear-and-tear" allowance in this case appears to be a general one. Wheras a "Trench Rate" implies something specific; like a hard-lying allowance.
Best regards
IL.

IL,

I hadn't realised there were different allowances available. I am still looking for relevant information to shed more light on this.

Best wishes
David
