The Dundee DRA chaps at Talana indeed were awarded the appropriate bar on their QSA and some time ago I illustrated a pair to the Tembuland MRC where the QSA was entitled to carry a Cape Colony bar. It may be fashionable to decry such as the Rifle Clubs and Associations as "not having done much" - but they were part of the fabric of the Colony and I am sure that most would have sold their lives dearly in extremis.
Good luck with your most interesting project.
Regards
Ian Linney.

Okay David thanks,
I assume that they all had the same rules to adhere to when they came into being.
Kind regards Frank

Sadly not. I do have the rules for Nottingham Road, Unlaas, Ladysmith and Wartburg.

Best wishes

Hi Ian,
You are of course correct, The Dundee RA received the Talana bar. There were also members of the Railway Rifle Association in Ladysmith who received the Defence of Ladysmith bar while serving with the Ladysmith Town Guard. Interestingly, Natal only had a few Town Guards - Dundee ( with Talana bar), Newcastle and Ladysmith.Does anyone know any others ?
My Tembuland MRC was a no bar ( W H Stark)

Mike,

A very warm welcome to the forum. I hope you will be able to contribute to the forum if time allows.

Good luck with the remaining RA medals. That would be a special collection once complete.

Can I check if you have a QSA to the Melmoth RA?

Vets wishes
David

Some time ago I obtained the QSA/KSA rolls for the TMRC on a CD. I had a look at it just now and the QSA medal roll dated 7/12/07 has "286 Pte W.H.Stark" as "name added and issued 6/12/07". All Cape Colony bars on this roll were struck out. A later roll dated 20/01/09, however, has your man Stark with QSA bars CC, 01 and 02. Along with a lot of others. As I said in the case of the Picken QSA/KSA pair I discussed recently, it looks as if some pressure was applied.
I hope I am not taking coals-to-Newcastle in telling you the above.
Regards
IL.

Hi Ian,
Thanks for the info on Stark. I think that the approach by the issuing authorities was rather uneven as they seemed to be farly rigid about most of the RA members not getting clasps even if they were in action.
What do you feel about adding clasps to Stark's medal ?

Mike
