Would anyone know if perhaps indeed a QSA roll for this unit exists. They were formed around Feb 1901 and served in the Eastern Transvaal and Swaziland area.

I ask, as a friend has a QSA to a man that served in the 2nd Regt Kitcheners Fighting Scouts and on the roll page that he appears on, it makes mention that he had previous service in the Lebombo Intelligence Scouts.

I don't seem to find any mention of this unit anywhere other than on the SA Military Society web site.

Thanks in advance

Hello Adrian
I have not noticed a reference to them on the FID roll, but then I have never looked for them either, will have another closer look in both the South and South Eastern Transvaal Intelligence Dept folios, will let you know if I spot anything that appears interesting.

Hello Frank,

Thanks for that.

I have looked through the rolls to the FID(QSA and KSA), SAC(QSA and KSA), Transvaal Mounted Police, Standerton Mounted Police, Vyrheid and Utrecht Police, National Scouts (just in case) and anything that I thought might be a possibility.I have drawn a blank every time. Apparently there were 61 men on a list at some point???

I am beginning to think that perhaps there never was a QSA roll drawn up for the LIS and the medals were issued off rolls of the Regiments/Units that the men served in after service with the LIS. Again this is just a guess.

Adrian,
Know how you feel, about 20 years ago I attempted to find the roll for the Natal Guides, had no idea it was to be found within the FID roll, of course had I bothered to ask around first, I would have saved myself much time and frustration, when I found it, I just had the whole FID roll copied.
I'm sure what you are looking for is out there, somewhere!
Frank.

Adrian

I have two booklets of records compiled by a New Zealander:
'Ghosts of the Lebombos' and 'Letters from Swaziland'.

A quick look revealed that there is a page on the Lebombo Intelligence Scouts with a photograph of the Swaziland Volunteer Regiment, which the researcher has identified as the LIS. Perhaps the alternative name is the one used for the QSA roll.

Evidently, the LIS were formed by David Forbes and the first scouts were recruited on 18 December 1901. A book by Forbes, 'My life in South Africa' will probably reveal all there is to know about the LIS.

You are welcome to borrow the booklets, which include the name and address of the New Zealand compiler, who is clearly an expert on Swaziland during the Boer War.

Regards
Brett

Hello Brett,

Thank you very much indeed for the added information.

I would most certainly like to have a read of these booklets. I shall contact you shortly.

Thanks again
