Stephen,
Miles was a Cape farmer, he served in A squadron 1st Brabant's after joining on the 16th November 1899 and in common with so many of the original members of this corps, he attested in Queenstown in the Cape Colony.
This corps also recruited men in Port Elizabeth, Kingwilliamstown and Capetown and many, including Miles, were actually sworn in by Brigadier General Brabant himself, it is his signature that is in the photo below the date!
It would not have been possible to join Brabant's Horse in New Zealand, interestingly, the general also had one son, Arthur Edward, who was mortally wounded in Ladysmith on the 3rd November 1899 whilst serving as a Lieutenant with the Imperial Light Horse and another, Guy Alfred, who served as a Captain in the SAMIF during the Boer War.
Good luck with your research.
Regards Frank

Frank,
Note it is 1st Brabants Horse. Appears to be a Kiwi (sworn in Queenstown, NZ?). Maybe a Queenstown in SA as well or every other commonwealth countryr that matter. My interest in BH is my GG was also part of the 1st Brabants Horse, Regt number 64. Enjoying the journey discovering BH and others that rode in SA at that time.
Thanks for sharing.
