i am trying to locate the records of J A Smithwick who served with this unit i 1900. he would go on to serve with the R I Regt and would deploy to F & F in 1914 as a captain with the 2nd Bn R I Regt. he died in 1915 as a result of wounds and is buried in Kilkenny Ireland. Any help with what his date of birth military records or any information about 45 coy would be great thanks.

Stav01,

9648 J Smithwith is listed on the Supplementary Roll for the 45th (Dublin) Company IY for the clasps SA01 and SA02 (WO100/126p9). A note says he served as Lt in the 27th Btn IY. He is the only man on that page with the SA02 clasp.

His QSA appears on WO100/126p7 for clasps CC OFS & Tr.

If you search the site, you find an entry in the shipping records showing him returning to the UK in Sept 1902.

Finally, there may be attestation papers for him in WO128 at the National Archives.

Good luck!

is it fair to assume then that he may have beeb commissioned in the field. Or may he have been given a temp promotion during his time in south africa. I have established via the london gazette that he is gazetted as a Lt in early 1902 but it doesnt say to which unit he belonged. He would be promoted and become an captain in the 4th sp reserve bn R I Regt in 1908 and would embark with 2bn bn with the BEF in 1914. thanks for your help.
