Good evening all -

I was lucky enough to pick up this miniature group a while back. It was unattributed, but the combination piqued my interest, and I was pretty sure that I could at least get a name or two that might match the entitlement.

Today I had some time and decided to see how far I could get.
I have recently managed to get a copy of Don Forsyth's Efficiency Decoration: Union of South Africa, and tackled the roll using the single WWI medal as a starting point. My hope being that the recipient was perhaps in the Active Citizen Force.
15th and 16th on the alphabetical list were two ACF members - Aspoas (Lt) and Aucamp (Capt), both AFC (Cadets). A quick check on that fantastic sight, NorthEast Medals - CGHGSM roll, and out pops Aucamp K.D., Special Const., Schermans Burgers (Bechuanaland clasp). I double checked this on Forsyth's roll - and he is the only one listed under Schermans Burgers. Again Special Constable.
I am now here, trying to confirm his QSA and KSA entitlement. Aucamp comes up under Surname Search, CGHGSM roll list, Schermans Burgers, but no more info.

Can someone help? And can someone enlighten me with regard to "Scherman's Burgers"? I have not come across this unit before.

Thank you.

best regards
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

An impressive group of miniatures and a verification challenge to boot!

I cannot find any information on Scherman's Burghers or Scherman in Bechuanaland. Given the sole recipient of the CGHGSM, it probably was a small unit.

I did check the QSA rolls and there is no one named Aucamp or Aspoas.

Best wishes

Good morning David -

Thank you for the reply.

I was a bit hasty in according the miniature group to Aucamp. I have not been able to find him on the QSA rolls either. So the research and attempt to attribute them continues ... but, as is usually the case, all is not lost, and another research project emerges.
The Scherman's Burgers tip-bit is interesting - Aucamp was the only one of this unit to receive the Bechuanaland clasp, so yes a very small unit. The challenge now is to find out more about this unit, and who was "Mr Scherman" ?

Thank you for your interest.

regards
Thomas

Thomas,

It is a challenge indeed. Hopefully you will be able to narrow down or identify the recipients. It might be worth checking on sites such as DNW to see if the full size medals have been sold too?

I did try some variations for the Sherman name without success but I like a challenge too so will keep looking.

Best wishes

Hello

There is an Aucamp on the medal rolls: on www.boerwarregister.com there is a P Aucamp Cape Colonial Forces - Ancestry have him indexed as Ancamp.

Doesn't match the KD Aucamp on the CGHGSM roll.

No Aspoas found.
