Major-General Sir William George Balfour Western was educated at Victoria
College, Jersey, and entered the 50th Regiment in 1879. He served with
the 1st Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment in the Nile Expedition, 1884-85;
Malakand and Buner campaigns, 1897-98, where he was wounded and mentioned in
despatches; in the South African War he commanded the 2nd Battalion Royal
West Kent Regiment until April, 1901, when he assumed command of a mobile
column which he held until the end of hostilities. He was twice
mentioned in despatches and created CB. During the Great War he served
in Gallipoli from July 1915 to January 1916; Greek Macedonia, Serbia,
Bulgaria, European Turkey and the Islands of the Aegean Sea from January to
March 1916; Italy from November 1917 to April 1918; Egyptian Expeditionary
Force from April to October 1918. He was wounded, mentioned in
despatches six times, promoted Major General and created KCMG. It is
noted on the medal cards that he was issued with duplicate Great War medals.

Wood, Lieutenant Colonel C, Essex Regiment
Cyril Wood was born Littleton, Middlesex and passed the Royal Military
College in 1871. He entered the 73rd Regiment as Sub Lieutenant in
July 1872 and transferred to the 56th Regiment in 1873. He was
promoted Captain, 1st Battalion of the Essex Regiment in 1882 and Major 2nd
Battalion in 1886. He was advanced to Lieutenant Colonel on 23
February 1900 and commanded the 1st Battalion between 1900 and 1904. (CB for
services in South Africa, mentioned in despatched by Lord Roberts on 10
April 1901 for meritorious service). Previously served in Ceylon,
India, Egypt and Malta variously from 1872 to 1887. He retired from
his command in February 1904.

Wyllie, Lieutenant Colonel A K, WRR
Colonel Wyllie commanded 3rd Battalion West Riding Regiment during
embodiment, in South Africa 1900-1902. He was Commandant at Simon's
Town from July 1900 to January 1901; at Wynberg from January to March 1901,
and was also Commandant of a Prisoner of War Camp for a short period in
1900. He was mentioned in despatches 29 November 1900, and created CB.
Wyllie was appointed Honourary Colonel of the 3rd Battalion in 1906 and was
Chairman RSPCA from 1926 until his death in 1928.
