This page has cap and shoulder badges from units from South
Africa, Australia, New Zealand,
Canada and India.
The following series of badges and shoulder titles would have been worn
during the Boer War. The rapid rise of locally recruited irregular
South African units gave rise to a need for a semi-official badge which
could be produced quickly and fashioned from rudimentary materials. In
their simplest form the badge was cut from sheet brass and worn on the
almost universally adopted slouch hat. The majority of these badges
were simply the letters of their unit although some were much more intricate
in design. There are often several variations for a single unit and
many are illustrated in the guide, 'South African Badges' by Owen. The
illustrated badges for Australia, Canada and New Zealand are official,
although some of the contingents from these countries had their own
distinctive badge, e.g. Queensland Mounted Infantry and New Zealand Mounted
Rifles.
