STAPLETON, JOHN HENRY, Lieutenant,
was born in 1866. He served in the South African War, as Lieutenant in the
South Australian Mounted Infantry, 1899-1900, and was present at operations
in the Transvaal, 1900, including actions at Diamond Hill. Operations in
the Transvaal, east of Pretoria, including action at Belfast. Operations in
Orange River Colony and Cape Colony. He was mentioned in Despatches [London
Gazette, 16 April 1901]; received the Queen's Medal with four clasps, and
was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette,
19 April 1901]: "John Henry Stapleton, Lieutenant, South Australian Mounted
Infantry. For services in the operations in South Africa". The Insignia,
etc, were forwarded to Australia, and presented in Adelaide. He was placed
on the Reserve of Officers 21 August 1911; awarded the Volunteers'
Decoration.
