HOLDEN, EDWARD CHARLES SHUTTLEWORTH,
Captain, was born 7 January 1865, only child of Charles Shuttleworth
Holden. He served in South Africa, 1899-1900, with Imperial Yeomanry,
attached to the Protectorate Regiment, and took part in the defence of
Mafeking, including actions of 26 November 1899, and 12 May 1900; operations
in the Transvaal, east and west of Pretoria, May to October 1900. He was
mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 10 September 1901]; received the
Queen's Medal with three clasps, and was created a Companion of the
Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 27 September 1901]: "Edward
Charles Shuttleworth Holden, Captain, Derbyshire Yeomanry Cavalry. In
recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". The
Insignia were presented by the King 29 October 1901. He became Honorary
Lieutenant Colonel, Derbyshire Yeomanry Cavalry, and resigned in 1910.
Lieutenant Colonel Holden married, in 1906, Aimee Marguerite (who died in
1913), youngest daughter of Vicomte de Labrosse and widow of William R
Cookson, of Binfield Park, Berkshire, and they had one son. He died 17 May
1916.
