Ellis, Conyngham Richard Cecil

ELLIS, CONYNGHAM RICHARD CECIL, Major, was born 28 March, 1863, only son of Reverend Conygham Ellis.  He was educated at Marlborough, and entered the Army 5 December 1883; was promoted Captain 5 April, 1893; became Major 29 March 1899.  He served in the South African War, 1899-1900, and was present at the Relief of Ladysmith, including the action at Colenso; operations of 17 to 24 January 1900, and action at Spion Kop (very severely wounded).  He was mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 10 September 1901]; received the Queen's Medal with clasp, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 27 September 1901]: "Conyngham Richard Cecil Ellis, Major, Scottish Rifles.  In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa".  The Insignia were sent to the Commander-in-Chief in India 30 January 1902, and presented by the GOC, Peshawar District, India, 19 March 1902.  Major Ellis retired from the Cameronians 9 March 1903.
