Times History of the War in South Africa

At Pieter's Hill, vol iii, page 539

Barton, who had been slightly wounded at the beginning of the action decided that the kopje must be taken, and got together three companies of the Dublins and a company of the Scots for the purpose.  Guided by Captain MacBean, his brigade major, the little force worked to the right, but met with terrific fire.  After every officer but one had been hit the advance came to a halt in a donga within 300 yards of the kopje.

At Nooitgedacht, Vol V, page 105

'Most of the men retreated on foot, and the last to come in were the party of Kitchener's Horse which had held the important kopje on the extreme left of the screen.  It was 10:30 a.m. when all the troops were assembled at Yeomanry Hill.  Another good soldier, MacBean of the Dublins, Clements’ brigade‑major, had been struck down at his general's side.
